December 1, 2021 – February 29, 2022 WHAT: Invitation-Only Big Wave Surf Contest in memory of Eddie Aikau WHERE: Waimea Bay, North Shore Oahu EVENT WINDOW: December 1, 2021 – February 29, 2022 ‘The Eddie’ is a big wave invitational surf contest named after Eddie Aikau. Eddie is a legendary North Shore lifeguard and surfer who was known to chase the biggest swells and charge the biggest waves. A well-known saying in the surf community is “Eddie would go” which refers to how the fearless waterman would commit to paddling into the biggest and gnarliest waves. This big wave North Shore surf competition has been around for 34 years but has only run a total of nine times since 1984 because the waves need to be huge for the contest to run. The competition is held at Waimea Bay – a legendary and challenging big-wave spot with a lot of history. The contest has a three-month window from December through February when everyone involved is keeping a close eye on the surf report in hopes of identifying a swell worthy of running the contest. They look for swells that will produce waves in the 30-40 feet range, and the contest will typically run if surf heights reach a consistent 20 feet (Hawaiian) between December 1 and February 29. The last time The Eddie ran in 2016, defending world champion and North Shore local John John Florence won the prestigious trophy. The opening ceremony to kick off the holding window is often held around the end of November or early December. GOOD TO KNOW: This event is a big deal with a lot of history surrounding it. It has only been given the green light to run nine times in the last 34 years! If you’re lucky enough to be in Oahu when this contest is a go, this is a surf competition that you don’t want to miss. Waimea Bay is the ultimate North Shore surf competition amphitheater with viewpoints surrounding the action. Bring binoculars, pack a lunch, and enjoy the show.

Hawaii’s most recognized landmark is known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater. This broad, saucer-shaped crater was formed about 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption that sent ash and fine particles in the air. As these materials settled, they cemented together into a rock called tuff, creating the crater, and which is visible from the trail in the park. Most of the vegetation and birds were introduced in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The trail to the summit of Lē‘ahi was built in 1908 as part of O‘ahu’s coastal defense system. The 0.8 mile hike from trailhead to the summit is steep and strenuous, gaining 560 feet as it ascends from the crater floor. The walk is a glimpse into the geological and military history of Diamond Head. A concrete walkway built to reduce erosion shifts to a natural tuff surface about 0.2 mile up the trail with many switchbacks traversing the steep slope of the crater interior. The ascent continues up steep stairs and through a lighted 225-foot tunnel to enter the Fire Control Station completed in 1911. Built on the summit, the station directed artillery fire from batteries in Waikiki and Fort Ruger outside Diamond Head crater. At the summit, you’ll see bunkers and a huge navigational lighthouse built in 1917. The postcard view of the shoreline from Koko Head to Wai‘anae is stunning, and during winter, may include passing humpback whales. Special Tips The last entrance to hike the trail is at 4:00 pm. The gates are locked at 6:00 pm daily and all visitors must be out of the park by this time. NO PETS ARE ALLOWED IN THE PARK EXCEPT SERVICE ANIMALS. The park facilities on the crater floor of Diamond Head are fully accessible to those with disabilities. The hiking trail to the summit is not ADA accessible, it is very steep and uneven in some areas. The last 1/10 of a mile is all stairs and especially steep. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for your hike. Wear good walking shoes, bring water, and wear a hat and sunscreen.

Haleakala National Park Summit Sunrise Reservations Haleakala National Park Near Kula, Hawaii Haleakala National Park is home to Maui's highest peak. Rising 10,023 (3,005 m) feet above sea level, Haleakala means "house of the sun" and is where demigod Maui lassoed the sun, slowing its passage so people had more time to dry kapa (cloth) and grow food. The dormant volcano's "crater" is actually a valley carved by erosion. Sunrise at the summit of Haleakala has been a visitor attraction since the late 1800s when Samuel Clemens wrote: "It was the sublimest spectacle I ever witnessed, and I think the memory of it will remain with me always." The park's Summit District begins at 7,000 feet (2,134 m) of elevation and reaches 10,023 feet (3,055 m). The summit's high elevation, the lack of light, and environmental pollution, and dynamic weather patterns make it an ideal and popular place to view the sky. Due to the popularity of sunrise viewing at the summit and limited parking, Haleakala National Park now requires reservations for each vehicle entering the park before sunrise (3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.). Reservations. A reservation is required for each vehicle entering the park from 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Beginning April 7, 2021 you may book a reservation up to 60 days in advance. Reservation Tip! Login to your account or create a new account before Haleakala National Park Summit Sunrise tickets go on sale. You can only add a ticket to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account. Please Note: Tickets are per vehicle, not per person. Tickets are limited to one per customer every three days. Booking Windows A reservation is required for each vehicle entering the park from 3:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Beginning April 7, 2021 you may book a reservation up to 60 days in advance. [ Google Review ] The north road to Hana is really not that bad. And all the stops we did were awesome. We used the guided Shaka app and would recommend. The south of Hana part, especially after the pools is ROUGH and scary. The other side of the island has a scary one lane road that doesn’t get the bad press this road does and it made this trip a walk in the park by comparison.

[ Google Review ] Amazing. Was scared to be honest but they made me feel very safe. Smaller choppers they said, a bit less comfortable but could get into better/more beautiful places. They were right! May have been the best part of our trip. Wow!
[ Google Review ] Captain Tony and crew Mark, Bobby and chief Micah were outstanding. The cruise ran smoothly with Captain Tony providing interesting facts along the way. The crew was very friendly always checking to see if we needed any thing, offering to take pictures during incredible views. We saw plenty of dolphins and whales with Captain stopping for us to watch the whales and dolphins. The food was very good. A trip well worth the time and money
